Falcon F1 from Connah’s Quay High School wins awards at ‘F1 for Schools’ Championship

Falcon F1 from Connah's Quay High School won awards for 'Best Engineered Car' and 'Most innovative thinking' in the North Wales Regional final of the 'F1 for Schools' Championship which was held at Bangor University in December.

F1 in Schools is a multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature balsa wood F1 cars. The cars are powered by a CO2 canister and race side-by-side along 20-metre straights.

For the second year in a row DRB sponsored a team from Connahs Quay High School. We supplied bearings for the wheels and one of the students manufactured the car's wheels in our workshop using our lathes. The car completed the 20m course in 1.5s, which is more than 65mph.

'F1 for Schools' is an international competition which spans 30 countries and around 9 million students. One of its aims is to encourage young people to look at engineering as a career and it encourages the teams to collaborate with industry.
