Merseyrail win 2011 DRB Charity Football Competition

The team from Merseyrail won DRB’s charity 5-a-side football competition

The event, which was held at Deeside College on the 12th May, started with a group stage with the 16 invited teams split into four groups of four. The winners and runners up from each group, then went through to the knock-out stages. All of the games, which are 12 minutes long, were keenly contested.

Both of the finalists in this years competition, Merseyrail and Kimberley Clark, had come out of the same group. Merseyrail had edged the group game 1-0 and so were slight favourites going into the final. The final itself was even closer with neither team able to score in normal play and the game going to a penalty shoot-out. Merseyrail held their nerve and eventually won the shoot-out 2-1.

The annual event is in its 13th year, with many teams returning year after year. It runs over a single evening starting at 6pm. The final finishes around 9pm with refreshments laid on for all the teams and their supporters.

The day is supported by Deeside College, who organise and the competition and provide the match officials, and by Penyfford Colts Under 15s who provide the ball boys.

The winners of the overall competition and of the 'most sporting team' award both get to nominate charities to receive donations. This years charities were Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital Appeal (Merseyrail) and Employees in the Community (Kimberley Clark, most sporting team).
